Román Baldorioty de Castro

        Román Baldorioty de Castro (23 February 1822 – 30 September 1889) was a leading Puerto Rican abolitionist and spokesman for the right to self-determination of Puerto Rico. In 1870, he was elected as a deputy in the Cortes Generales, the Spanish parliament, where he promoted abolition of slavery.

Albizu Campos

        Albizu Campos was black (June 29, 1893 – April 21, 1965), and was honorably discharged from the Army in 1919, with the rank of First Lieutenant.His exposure to racism during his time in the U.S. military altered his perspective on U.S. and Puerto Rico relationships. He became the leading advocate for Puerto Rican independence

Luisa Capetillo

          Luisa Capetillo (October 28, 1879 – April 10, 1922) was one of Puerto Rico's most famous labor leaders. She was an anarchist writer, activist, labor organizer who fought for workers' rights, women's rights, free love, and human emancipation.
